Gore

Will he, or won't he?

According to one influential Democratic insider, close associates of the former Vice President have communicated to him and other prominent fund-raisers who are uncommitted to the other ’08 candidates that Mr. Gore will consider entering the race—if an opening presents itself—in September.
If an opening presents itself? What does that mean?

I voted for Al Gore in 2000. I would have voted for him if he had run in 2004. If he runs in '08, I will probably vote for him again, but only if he shows me he wants to be president.

You don't run for high office "if an opening presents itself." You make an opening. You elbow people out of your way. You walk over their broken bodies if you have to. If you don't have the will to seize it, you don't deserve it.

I have the same criticism of Newt Gingrich. He says he'll run for president if the American people demand it. What is he thinking? The American people don't have time to convince Gingrich to run for president. They have their own problems. If he wants to be president, it is incumbent on him to make the case to the voters. Otherwise, he might as well go out and get a job, because he can forget about the White House.
