ABC taps ratings loser to helm GMA

The new executive producer of Good Morning America is Jim Murphy, former EP of the CBS Evening news, and a veteran of the CBS morning show.

I don't know Mr. Murphy. I am sure that he is perfectly wonderful person. But, why on earth would ABC hire someone whose resume includes last-place network news programs to lead a revamped GMA into battle against a revamped Today Show? How do decisions like this get made?

"With Couric gone, we have a chance to take the Today Show out. We need a real heavy-hitter at the helm."

    "Hey, how about Jim Murphy?"

    "Who's that?"

"He was the Executive Producer of the CBS Evening News for six years."

"Hmm. That newscast was in last place the entire time he was EP."

"He worked for the CBS morning show before that."

"Hmm. That show has been a ratings loser forever, too. Alright. He's our guy. Get him on the phone."
It seems to me that if you're going to make a major push to change the ratings landscape for your newscast, you'd want somebody who has demonstrated the ability to win. Or, at the very least, someone who can point to something other than an unbroken record of failure.

But, maybe that's just me.
