Set aside for a moment the question of whether those speedboats really posed a threat to U.S. warships in the Straits of Hormuz.
What exactly is supposed to be the point of this?
President Bush is warning Iran of serious consequences if it attacks U.S. ships in international waters. VOA's Paula Wolfson reports Mr. Bush says all options are on the table.Um... yeah. I'm pretty sure that Iran knows that if it attacks U.S. warships in international waters, there will be serious consequences. Attacking U.S. warships in international waters would be an act of war. It goes without saying that there would be consequences if Iran or any other country attacked an American military vessel in international waters. At least, it should go without saying.
The president says the government of Iran knows where he stands.
"We have made it clear publicly and they know our position, and that is there will be serious consequences if they attack our ships, pure and simple," said President Bush.
Apparently, Bush doesn't understand that he diminshes himself, his office, and his country with these kinds of empty proclamations. I suppose he thinks it makes him look tough. It really just makes him look ignorant and insecure. That's not the kind image that inspires respect on the international stage.

I think Bush message was not intended for Iran, but for the American public. To show them once more that Iran is threatening the U.S. get their support for a possible attack.
The have been provoking Iran for a while now hoping I think that Iran will bite and give the U.S. reason to respond militarily. I mean if Iran attacks the U.S. Bush will be forced to fight back.
Im with CW. This message may have been made in Saudi Arabia, but its intended audience is the US population.
Bush wants to attack Iran, but even the president doesn't have the power to just start a war on a whim. He has been drumming up excuses, but hasn't been able to get enough political support. With the election not that far away though, he has only months to start the attacks - and nothing to lose. His attempts to provoke Iran failed, because the leadership of Iran is too sensible to start a fight they know they cant win. His attempt to invent a WMD threat failed. So he is getting desperate now, and I think he is preparing for one last all-or-nothing attempt to end his presidency in a blaze of glory (And a mess for his successor).
