Maybe Trent Lott's hasty resignation really is just about the money.
MSNBC writes:
While the exactly reason Lott is stepping down before he finishes his term is unknown, the general speculation is that a quick departure immunizes Lott against tougher restrictions in a new lobbying law that takes effect at the end of the year. That law would require Senators to wait two-years before entering the lucrative world of lobbying Congress. How pathetic would that be? When Lott announced he would run for reelection in 2006, it was all about serving the people, to hear him tell it.
And so for me it became a choice: Do I spend the future with my wife Tricia and our family, spending more time with the grandchildren, or do I continue to ask the people to allow me to serve this great state in our nation's capital? Now, just one year into a senate term that doesn't end until 2012, he is dropping Mississippi and America like bad habits.
And I've made a choice and it's been one of consultation and one of support by my wonderful wife.
But I have chosen Mississippi and America once again. I am going to ask the people to reelect me to another term in the United States Senate.
To be fair to Lott, he couldn't have known that the Democratic majority would place mild restrictions on the corrupt practice of allowing former members of congress to to lobby their former colleagues on behalf of big business.
I mean, when you're forced to choose between serving the people or serving your bank account, what's a guy to do?
