William Jefferson indicted

A federal grand jury has issued a 94-page indictment against Rep. William Jefferson (D-LA), who was found in 2005 to have $90 thousand in marked money from a bribery investigation in his freezer. If convicted on all counts, Jefferson could be sentenced to a total of 235 years in prison, the Washington Post reports.

Among the charges listed in the indictment, said the official, are racketeering, soliciting bribes, wire fraud, money-laundering, obstruction of justice, conspiracy and violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case.

Jefferson is accused of soliciting bribes for himself and his family, and also for bribing a Nigerian official.
Jefferson has insisted all along that he did nothing wrong. So far, he has yet to explain the $90 thousand. I can't imagine what would explain the $90 thousand, but if there is an explanation I would love to hear it. I guess we'll get his side of it during the trial, assuming he doesn't plead out.
