Even as members of his party criticized the DCCC for an online ad featuring flag-draped coffins, Ohio Senator Mike DeWine was preparing a TV ad with footage from 9/11. The ad attacks Sherrod Brown, DeWine's Democratic opponent, for casting votes in the House of Representatives that DeWine suggests would weaken this country's defenses against terrorism.
From the Columbus Dispatch.
"That’s a pretty tough ad," said John Green, director of the Ray C. Bliss Institute for Applied Politics at the University of Akron. "It suggests the Republicans see terrorism as a very potent issue in an off-year election.I'm sure that, in the face of Democratic criticism, DeWine will be yanking the ad off the air right away. That's how the game is played, right?
"That certainly would be regarded by many as very controversial because it would be using images most people think of as images of a national tragedy. (But) I think a lot of political pros would argue it’s fair game."
John Ryan, Brown’s campaign manager, denounced DeWine for a "new, shameful low" for using the images of the Trade Center and hijackers.
Right?
