ABC is unwilling, apparently, to allow Elizabeth Vargas to fly solo on World News Tonight in Bob Woodruff's absence.
ABC News is planning for two of its highest-profile journalists, Diane Sawyer and Charles Gibson, to fill in on "World News Tonight" while the program's co-anchor, Bob Woodruff, continues to recover from injuries suffered on Sunday in Iraq, a person apprised of the plans said yesterday. If I were Elizabeth Vargas, I might find this bothersome. ABC only adopted this format in December. It is not as though America has had time to get used to, or rely upon, the two-anchor format for this newscast. Nobody is thinking, "oh, no! How will she manage without Bob?"
Under the arrangement, Mr. Gibson and Ms. Sawyer, co-anchors of "Good Morning America," will alternate in the job, sitting alongside Elizabeth Vargas, who was named co-anchor of "World News" with Mr. Woodruff in December, said the person, who insisted on anonymity because of the delicacy of the situation and the negotiations.
Does Bob Woodruff bring some gravitas to World News Tonight that I hadn't noticed, or that Vargas is incapable of bringing? She is not some FOX "News" model reading words off the 'prompter that she doesn't understand. She's been in the business for 20 years. In fact, when they announced the lineup to replace Peter Jennings, most observers looked at Vargas as the A-lister and at Woodruff as the new guy.
How about a little respect, ABC News?
