CNN: "Funeral Politics"

CNN's Miles O'Brien files a story this morning slugged "Funeral Politics." He describes George W. Bush's eulogy for Coretta Scott King as "dignified." He derides Jimmy Carter's and Rev. Lowery's eulogies as "partisan" and "political."

Mrs. King devoted her life to political activism. It is entirely appropriate to remind those gathered at her funeral of the dreams that she and her husband dreamed as well as the relative degree to which those dreams have been realized. The little bees in the cable news swarm over the political remarks at the funeral don't seem to realize this.

UPDATE

O'BRIEN (teasing further coverage of the Funeral Politics story): Some are calling it a "Wellstone Moment."'

Hack.

UPDATE II

Jeff Greenfield tells O'Brien that, rather than the political commentary itself, he was more surprised by how quickly the 'wingers jumped on it. Mentions Drudge and Limbaugh in particular. Says the "Wellstone Moment" crack originated with Limbaugh.

O'Brien wants to know if Greenfield would have injected politics into the funeral.

Greenfield reminds O'Brien that Dr. and Mrs. King were iconic political figures, but adds that the political references at the funeral could have been more subtle.
