On September 10, 2004, Harriet Miers fielded questions in an "Ask the White House" forum on the administration's website.
At the time, Ms. Miers was Assistant to the President and Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy. Today, she serves as White House Counsel. This morning, President Bush announced her nomination as a justice on the United States Supreme Court.
Ms. Miers has never served as a judge, so she has no judicial record for anyone to review. Her "Ask the White House" responses comprise a prominent collection of her public writings.
A typical exchange:
John, from Scheldt writes:One might assume from this exchange that a Justice Miers would support the president's strategy in the Global War on Terror. Too bad there weren't any questions about reproductive rights.
GOD BLESS AMERICA AND GEORGE w. BUSH - Could you please emphasize the point that we are in a struggle for civilization and the survival of the free world against anarchism and barbarism? - this is not just about Iraq or even the Middle East - it's about the fight to preserve our way of life against extremists who would return us to the Dark Ages. Would it be too much to ask to promote this point at every opportunity - does the White House feel the same??John
Harriet Miers
John, thank you for writing and for expressing yourself so wonderfully. I certainly agree with you. As I said before, we will persevere and we will not relent!
She handled herself pretty well, don't you think? Interrogation by the senate shouldn't prove too much of a problem. ;-)
