WASHINGTON -- Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald huddled with his legal team Thursday as two key White House aides awaited their fate in the CIA leak probe.
A spokesman for the prosecutor said there would be no public announcements Thursday. The term of the grand jury that could bring indictments expires Friday.
- Limbaugh: Blah blah blah LIBERAL MEDIA blah blah DESPERATION blah blah blah BUSH IS GOD blah.
This investigation has near-biblical significance for Bush, his administration and for this country. This is more important than Watergate. Officials operating at the highest levels of government may have compromised the security of the United States in order to cover up the fact that they contrived the reasons for going to war. If borne out, these allegations will demonstrate unprecedented moral and political corruption on the part of the perpetrators and those who enabled them before and after the fact.
What is at stake is nothing less than the ability of the American people to trust in the rule of law. Even for those who hate Bush, who in their hearts truly hate him, this is not about bringing one man to his knees. It is about wanting to see justice meted out to criminals posing as politicians and policy makers. It is about wanting to believe that the rule of law applies to the powerful as well as to the people.
This is why we are watching this case so closely. It is why the anticipation of the conclusion of the Fitzgerald investigation is almost too much to bear. We want to know that the American system of justice really works. We are holding our breath.
