After saying he had no memory of having been a member of the Federalist Society, it now turns out that... sigh... he was, in fact, a member of the Federalist Society.
The Washington Post reports:
Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts Jr. has repeatedly said that he has no memory of belonging to the Federalist Society, but his name appears in the influential, conservative legal organization's 1997-1998 leadership directory. So, Mr. - excuse me - Judge Middle-American Values turns out to be of a piece with every single other Bush Administration official. I don't know why I am surprised, frankly.
We have a nomninee for the highest court in the land caught in an undeniable and completely self-benefitting falsehood. I don't think it is going too far to suggest that self-serving liars (or, morons who can't remember being a member of a group eight long years ago) are unfit for confirmation to the Supreme Court. This isn't even a matter of interpretation. This is in no way similar to Clarence Thomas claiming that he had never once considered the legality of Roe v. Wade. We don't need to wonder if Roberts was telling the truth even though we know in our heart-of-hearts that he was not.
Obviously, the only thing for the man to do, if he is the paragon of virtue that conservatives say he is, is to make a public apology and withdraw his name from consideration.
I can't wait to see the talking points on this one.
