House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (or, "The House," as he might prefer) blames an "out of control judiciary" for the death of Terri Schiavo, and he intends to make them pay.
From the AP:
Asked about the possibility of the House's bringing impeachment charges against judges in the Schiavo case, DeLay said, "There's plenty of time to look into that."The conservatives made a game effort, but they just couldn't make liberals the bogeymen on this one. Next best thing: "activist judges." Activist judges are letting homasekshuls get married! They're letting teenaged girls get abortions! They KILLED TERRI SCHIAVO! GIT 'EM!!

Joining DeLay in taking issue with the judiciary was Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., who said, "The actions on the part of the Florida court and the U.S. Supreme Court are unconscionable." Also, GOP Rep. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina said the case "saw a state judge completely ignore a congressional committees subpoena and insult its intent" and "a federal court not only reject, but deride the very law that Congress passed."
DeLay said he would make sure that the GOP-controlled House "will look at an arrogant and out of control judiciary that thumbs its nose at Congress and the president."
For all their rhetorical reverence for the founding fathers, conservatives display an astonishing degree of contempt for the institutions and conventions the founding fathers established. An independent judiciary? Fine... as long as it's not too independent.
Federalism? Yeah, sure. As long as "states' rights" doesn't conflict with "Right to Life."
Advise and consent? Whatever. Just make sure you sign off on whatever Bush wants.
Is it possible that DeLay and company genuinely believe there is popular support for making the rule of American law subordinate to the wishes of the religious right? I always thought DeLay was being melodramatic when he said he was in congress to promote a "biblical worldview" in American politics. You know, just sort of playing to base.
Apparently not.
