President Bush wrapped up his trip to promote his Social Security proposals today, assuring elderly people in New Mexico that the personal accounts he envisioned would not threaten their retirement benefits.

"If you're getting a Social Security check, you're going to keep getting your check," Mr. Bush told an audience at Albuquerque. "I don't care what they're telling you, I don't care what the fine print in the political ads say, you will get your check."

Surely, our president wouldn't have waited until we were all distracted with some other Great Political Issue so he could wrap up his grand tour on a relatively high note? Nah, he wouldn't do that.
